Basins are a key part of achieving safe, clean waterways
Rainwater can enter the sewer system during rain events and cause a mixture of sewage and rainwater to flow untreated into our waterways. Proposed and existing storage basins—throughout our city—are designed to retain the mixture of rainwater and sewage until the rain subsides, and then gradually release it back into the sewer system for treatment.
Southwestern Parkway Storage Basin
This Southwestern Parkway Storage Basin—which will be a covered underground facility—will be located in Shawnee Park, near the Southwestern Parkway entrance. Input from the neighbors—at public meetings and online—will help determine the aesthetics of the finished project, as well as the use of the area above the basin. When completed, the project will be largely invisible to the public and will enhance not only the water quality of the Ohio River, but also the quality of one of Louisville’s premiere parks.
