MSD conducted an Orientation Meeting, held on January 19, 2016, introducing a project in your area. The meeting provided information about MSD's Consent Decree, the role of underground storage basins in reducing sewer overflows, and a brief overview of the Lexington & Payne Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Basin Project.
This and other basins are part of MSD's larger endeavor to reduce sewer overflows into Louisville's waterways. Planned basins throughout our city are designed to capture rainwater and sewage, which otherwise can overwhelm the sewer system during rain events and flow untreated into our waterways. These underground basins retain the mixture of rainwater and sewage until the rain subsides and system capacity is available. The mixture is then gradually released back into the system and conveyed to a water quality treatment center.
